JEFFERSON, THOMAS, President . Autograph document signed twice in third person ("Thomas Jefferson"), also signed by Randolph Jefferson and witnesses John Nicholas, John Can and Alex Carralt(?), n.p., 17 April 1796. 1 page, 4to, 218 x 185 mm. (8 5/8 x 7¼ in.), verso silked, dampstains to right-hand portion obscuring a few words, original papered seal, verso docketed "Jefferson to Jefferson...," matted and glazed in a giltwood frame incorporating an engraved bust-length portrait of Jefferson . JEFFERSON WRITES OUT THE DOCUMENT BY WHICH HE PURCHASES 400 ACRES FROM HIS BROTHER A unusual deed, wholly in Jefferson's hand, by which he purchases as share in certain lands from his brother, who had in turn acquired them from their father, Peter Jefferson: "This indenture made...between Randolph Jefferson...and Thomas Jefferson ..that whereas the said Randolph under the will of Peter Jefferson their father is siesed in fee simple in an undivided sixth part as tenant in common in a certain parcel of land in the county of Albemarle on the branches of Hardvare river containing by estimation [400]acres with a quarry of limestone theron...[The] said lands were granted [to] Philip Mayo by patent...and by the said Philip were conveyed...to Peter Jefferson... [N]ow the said Randolph in consideration of 5 pound five shillings and certain articles of household furniture...hath given granted bargained & sold unto the said Thomas Jefferson all his right title and estate in the said lands..."
