A LAND GRANT BEARING TWO PRESIDENTIAL SIGNATURES, awarded to William Barlow, the assignee of Continental Army veteran Jacob Springer. Jefferson makes the grant pursuant to the 1790 Congressional Act calling for the award of land in the Ohio Valley, "between the Little Miami and Sciota" to "Officers and Soldiers of the Virginia Line on [the] Continental Establishment." The line of assignees from soldier Springer to beneficiary Barlow suggests the extent to which such veterans' benefits were traded in the volatile economy of the early Republic. Springer assigned his claim to a William Harrison (the future President or just a namesake?), who then assigned it to Victor Larimer, who assigned it to Barlow.
