Newspapers include the Boston Independent Chronicle , the New York Herald , and New York’s Republican Watchtower , and content includes pieces concerning Jefferson’s alleged relationship with Sally Hemings, a report on the Lewis and Clark expedition, extracts from Jefferson’s Notes on the State of Virginia , and several messages and proclamations by Jefferson concerning public lands, the killing of a U.S. citizen by a British vessel in New York harbor, an Indian treaty, Barbary pirates, and other topics. – Message from the President of the United States, accompanying A Statement of Expenditures from the 1st of January, 1797 .
