Millet aborde le sujet d'une femme tenant une cruche sur ses épaules à plusieurs moments de sa carrière. Il traite le thème très tôt, vers 1840-1845, dans une petite aquarelle évoquant encore l'art du XVIIIe siècle (Herbert, op. cit., fig. 1). Quelques années plus tard, vers 1847-1848, l'artiste exécute le présent dessin à l'aspect achevé (il s'agit du plus grand des dessins conservés de ce sujet) où la figure est représentée dans un paysage décrit avec détail. S'ensuivent trois études de plus petites dimensions et plus rapidement esquissées où le paysage n'est qu'à peine évoqué (idem, figs. 3-5). Ces dernières semblent directement préparatoires à une petite huile sur carton peinte vers 1849-1850, aujourd'hui au Princeton Museum of Art (idem, fig. 6). Tout comme sur le dessin de la collection Delon, la cruche, posée sur l'épaule droite du modèle, est maintenue grâce à une double corde que la femme tient dans sa main gauche. L'artiste explore une nouvelle fois le sujet vers 1851-1853 dans deux dessins et une huile sur toile du Barber Institute de Birmingham (idem, figs. 7-9). Cette fois, la cruche est sur l'épaule gauche et la corde est tenue par la main droite, tandis qu'à l'arrière-plan, se distingue une barrière. Près de dix ans plus tard, il réalise un nouveau tableau sur ce sujet, aujourd'hui conservé à la Galleria d'Arte Moderna de Milan (idem, fig. 11). Enfin, Millet réalise en 1871 puis en 1874 deux tableaux de plus grandes dimensions sur le thème de la Porteuse de cruche, le premier en collection privée, le second au Musée du Louvre (idem, figs. 13-14).
Millet tackled the subject of a woman holding a jug on her shoulders at several points in his career. He dealt with the theme very early on, around 1840-1845, in a small watercolour that still evokes 18th century art (Herbert, op. cit., fig. 1). A few years later, around 1847-48, the artist produced the present finished drawing (the largest of the surviving drawings on this subject) in which the figure is depicted in a landscape described in detail. This is followed by three smaller, more rapidly sketched studies in which the landscape is barely mentioned (idem, figs. 3-5). These seem to be directly preparatory to a small oil on board painted around 1849-50, now in the Princeton Museum of Art (idem, fig. 6). As in the drawing in the Delon Collection, the jug, placed on the model's right shoulder, is held in place by a double rope in the woman's left hand. The artist explored the subject again around 1851-53 in two drawings and an oil on canvas in the Barber Institute in Birmingham (idem, figs. 7-9). This time the jug is on the left shoulder and the rope is held in the right hand, while in the background a fence stands out. Almost ten years later, he painted a new picture on this subject, now in the Galleria d'Arte Moderna in Milan (idem, fig. 11).
