Japanese Lacquered and Giltwood Shrine Edo Period, early 19th century The rectangular form comprising of the upper shrine section resting on two lower sections, one with a large single drawer the other with five smaller drawers, each drawer inset with polychrome painted, deeply carved and pierced bird and flower panels, the upper section with four hinged panel doors opening outward to reveal four inner panel doors, each inset with polychrome painted carved and pierced foliate panels, the inner shrine with a series of shelves and plinths over three small drawers, the upper portion with vertical cylindrical pillars, above all a frontice piece heavily carved with opposing dragons amid swirling clouds, bound overall with bronze fittings and lock plates, the two outer sides with three iron loose ring handles for carrying, the exterior painted black.
