7 (of the 8) plates which were added to the drawings in Obata’s 1940 “Seasons at California” portfolio to make a new portfolio - California’s Colorful Campuses. Reproductions of paintings by Obata of University of California campuses, all mounted on 12 x 15 backing paper. Now loose-leaf in a cover designed for the 1940 printing. Includes: Call of the Waves, La Jolla Cyclotron at Berkeley Open Vista, San Francisco campus Early Summer, Los Angeles campus Green Rhythm, Riverside Restful atmosphere, Davis Evening Glow, Santa Barbara Obata was already a well-known California artist and UC Berkeley Professor of Art when he painted the scenes reproduced and collected in his 1940 portfolio. Following his wartime internment, he and his wife returned to reopen their Berkeley studio, while Obata continued to teach art classes. He painted these UC campus drawings during that postwar period. After his academic retirement in 1954, he devoted his time to painting and to conducting art tours of Japan. Six of these plates show scenes from UC campuses other than Berkeley.
