JANVIER, Jean (fl. 1746-76) and S.G. LONGCHAMPS, L'Amerique divise en tous ses pays et etats. Paris: Longchamps and Janvier, Rue St. Jacques et L'Enseigne de la Place des Victoires, 1754.
JANVIER, Jean (fl. 1746-76) and S.G. LONGCHAMPS, L'Amerique divise en tous ses pays et etats. Paris: Longchamps and Janvier, Rue St. Jacques et L'Enseigne de la Place des Victoires, 1754. Engraved wall map of the Americas, colored by a contemporary hand, on eight sheets, joined overall image 1200 x 1475 mm (1270 x 1535 mm sheet), oriented to the east, featuring the Sea or Bay of the West "Mer ou Baye de l'Ouest" north of California; small inset map of the world in 2 hemispheres at lower border, the map surrounded by 17 vignettes with scenes from American history and discovery, with complementary texts and 2 larger text vignettes along lower margin. (Repairs along folds on back, with occasional minor loss of image or text, some browning and staining.) Framed. Janvier and Longchamps both sold maps from the Rue St. Jacques in Paris and came together around 1751 until circa 1776 to collaborate in the expensive production of wallmaps for the nobility and gentry of France. In 1754 they issued a series of five wallmaps, comprising the world and the four continents (of which this lot originally was part), which appears to have been the culmination of their partnership. Both Janvier and Longchamps later assisted Bonne with the Atlas Modern between 1762-1771. These two mapmakers continued the tradition of the publication of wallmaps in France begun by Nolin in the late 17th century, and it is likely that Jean-Baptiste Nolin II (1680-1762), who also worked in the Rue St. Jacques, encouraged Janvier and Longchamps in their ambitious endeavours.
