Beschreibung:

JANSSONIUS, Johannes (1588-1664). Nova Belgica et Anglia Nova . Amsterdam: [1649]. Influential map of the eastern coast of North America, from Nova Scotia to Virginia, naming Manbattes (Manhattan) and N. Amsterdam . Published at the height of the Blaeu-Janssonius competition, this map is Janssonius' individual take on the map first published by Johannes de Laet in 1630. The high degree of Dutch influence is denoted by the absence of the advanced cartography of Champlain, although the northern part does include 'Grand Lac,' which is probably Lake Huron. The colony at Plymouth is also noted. Burden I, 247 (second state); Van der Krogt I, 9310:1A.2 (from Novus Atlas 1:424.3G, map 80). Engraved double-page map, coloured by a contemporary hand, German text on verso, cartouche with Native American supporters surmounted by coat-of-arms, land interior decorated with images of a longhouse settlement, bears, egrets, and beavers, the sea with compass roses with intersecting rhumb lines, European ships, and a sea monster and a whale either side of Bermuda,387 x 507mm (plate mark), 499 x 590mm (sheet).
