William Edward Vigor, rector of Botus Fleming, Cornwall, fl. 1851-90) The General Account Book of Rents &c in Bucks, Hants, Suffolk &c belonging to W. Vigor [& letter book correspondence of William Edward Vigor from Botus Fleming, Cornwall], autograph manuscript, including references to rent of a house in Basingstoke by "Mrs. Lefroy", 77pp. excluding blanks, in two hands, Plymouth bookseller's invoice made out to the Rev. W.E. Vigor loosely inserted, original vellum, yellowed, folio, watermarked "W Bickford 1837", October 1835 - 3rd October 1844 & 24th March 1865 - 26th March 1876. *** References to Anna Lefroy: "House = Basingstoke/Mrs Lefroy Tenant £80Pan"; "1837 July 22 To Cash of Mrs Lefroy for use of Fixtures [£]30"; "1837 Decr To... Mrs Lefroy/ 1/2 Years Rent [£]40." "Benjamin [Lefroy, (1791-1829)]... married 8 November 1814 at Steventon Anna Austen... and had seven children. Ben Lefroy eventually took Holy Orders in 1817 and became curate of Lasham, near Alton; he held the family living of Cpmpton 1819-23, and then succeeded his brother as rector of Ashe in 1823. Following his early death in 1829 Anna and her children lived in various rented houses in Westham, Oakley, Basingstoke, Winchester, Monk Sherborne and Reading... ." - Jane Austen's Letters, OUP, 1995. Anna Austen was the daughter of the Rev James Austen (1765-1819), the eldest brother of Jane Austen and his first wife Anne Mathew (d. 1795). When Anna was two her mother suddenly died and "Anna was taken from Deane to Steventon to be cared for by her grandmother and aunts... Anna became a dearly loved part of the Steventon family, and the nearest thing to a child of their own for Cassandra and Jane. Jane's acute observation of children must have sprung first from this little niece; when the small Gardiners in Pride and Prejudice express joy in purely physical fashion, 'over their whole bodies, in a variety of capers and frisks', we are surely seeing Anna at a happy moment." (Claire Tomalin, Jane Austen: A Life, 1997). In later years Anna was the chief source of information about Jane Austen's personal life.
