Jan Dirksz. Both (Dutch 1615/18-1652) A view of Ponte Molle at dusk with figures and animals to the foreground Oil on canvas 79 x 111cm (31 x 43½ in.) Jan Both was a pioneer of Italianate landscape painting in 17th century Holland. His style was based on the work of Claude Lorrain with whom he collaborated in Rome. Jan Both was born in Utrecht c. 1615 to a glass painter and engraver. Jan and his elder brother Andries were apprenticed to Abraham Bloemaert in Utrecht and often visited Gerrit van Honthorst. By 1638 Jan and his brother had moved to Rome. Both became renowned for their warm golden light across Roman campagna and notorious for the vividness of their figures. Desirability for Both's work grew amongst European patrons, in particular amongst Dutch patricians who favoured the idealised Italianate landscape rather than the traditional Dutch landscapes of artists such as Van Goyen. Both's landscapes heightened the viewers connection with nature and depicted glorious views of distant Italian landscapes, many of which were concocted in Both's imagination. The view depicted here shows Ponte Molle (or Ponte Milvio) which crosses over the River Tiber in North Rome and was the site of the famous battle of the Milvian Bridge between Roman Emperors Constantine I and Maxentius.
