Jan Breughel I (Brussels 1568-1625 Antwerp) Landscape with figures on a road through a wood, with a chapel beyond oil on copper, stamped on the reverse with the maker's mark of Pieter Stas (active in Antwerp c . 1587-1610) 8 7/8 x 13 3/8 in. (21.2 x 34 cm.) Provenance Count Gustaf Adolf Sparre (1746-1794), Skåne, Sweden, and by inheritance to his wife, Countess Amelie (née Ramel) Sparre (1753-1830), Skåne, Sweden, and by descent to her grandson, Count Gustaf Adolf Frederik de la Gardie (1800-1830), Skåne, Sweden, and by inheritance to his father, Count Jacob Gustaf de la Gardie (1768-1842), by whom sold in c. 1840 to the following, Count Carl de Geer of Leufstra (1781-1861), and given in 1855 to his granddaughter, Elisabeth von Platen-Wachtmeister (1834-1918) and her husband Count Axel Fredrik Wachtmeister (1827-1899), Vanås, Sweden, and by descent. Anonymous sale; Sotheby’s, London, 5 December 2007, lot 2, as ‘Studio of Jan Brueghel I’. with Johnny van Haeften, TEFAF, Maastricht, 2008. with Richard Green, London, 2008, from whom acquired by the present owner.
