JAMES SOWERBY (1757-1822) Coloured Figures of English Fungi or Mushrooms. London: J.Davis [vols.I-II] or R.Wilks [vol.III] for Sowerby and others, [1795-]1797-1803[-1815]. 4 volumes, including Supplement, 2° (315 x 195mm). 440 hand-coloured engraved plates after Sowerby on 436 leaves. (Occasional light spotting or offsetting.) Contemporary half calf [vols.I-III] (neatly rebacked to style with original labels laid down), the supplement bound to match at the time of the re-backing of vols.I-III. Provenance : John Leigh Philips (bookplate); R.W.Barton ('Springwood' booklabel); St.Chad's College, Durham (ink stamps on endpapers); Denstone College, Science Library (labels on upper covers); Robert de Belder (sale Sothebys 28 April 1987 lot 342). ONE OF THE FINEST BOOKS ON FUNGI WITH A DISTIGUISHED PROVENANCE. The Supplement is rare, was never completed and never included a title page. The copper-engraved plates are printed using a single base colour (normally black, but occasionally, when the subject warranted it, in orange, brown, etc), they are all then finished by hand.
