JAMES 'III' BINDING -- Carlo de AQUINO (1654-1737). Sacra exequialia in funebre Jacobi II. Rome: Barberinis for Dominico Antonio Hercules, 1702. 2° (340 x 220mm). Engraved Royal arms on title. 19 engraved plates by Alexander Specchi after Sebastiano Cipriani including 4 folding, folding engraved portrait of Prince James Edward by Edelinck after de Troyes. Engraved headpiece to the 'Oratio.' Woodcut tailpieces and historiated initials. (Folding plates with some closed internal tears and occasional tiny holes, additional short marginal tears to plates and one text leaf, title lightly soiled at margins.) Contemporary [?] French black morocco, covers with wide gilt border enclosing the arms of 'James III' within a wreath, inner corners tooled with a lion or fleur-de-lis, spine gilt in seven compartments, one directly lettered, the remainder tooled with alternate pattern of large fleur-de-lis or triple lions, black morocco doublures with similar wide borders and the same tools at corners, black marbled free endpapers (corners bumped, inner borders of doublures slightly damaged and repaired). 20th-century black morocco box (broken). Provenance : Maurice Burrus (bookplate dated 1937) -- sold Sotheby's London, 4 June 1973, lot 83 to Breslauer for £1,300, sold to:) -- Lord Perth. FINE EXAMPLE OF A 'JAMES III' BINDING, particularly emotive for covering an account of the funeral rites of his father James II in the church of St. Lawrence in Lucina. With five magnificent folding plates, the last a contemporary portrait of James Edward at 12 years old. The single page plates are of an emblematic character, emphasising the virtues of James II and the happiness of the final period of his life under the protection of the Pope. The arms have slight differences from the version given in Davenport p. 256, being within the Garter and on a square not a round escutcheon, also in having a square rather than a round border to the lion of Scotland. Berlin Kat. 3238, calling for only 19 plates.
