JAMES I, King of England (1566-1625). Orders, thought meete by his Majestie, and his Privie Counsell, to be executed throughout the Counties of this Realme, in such Townes, Villages, and other places, as are, or may be hereafter infected with the Plague, for the stay of further increase of the same London: Printed by Robert Barker 1603. 4 o (181 x 124 mm). (Title soiled, small wormhole on final two leaves touching one letter, few headlines cropped, few minor marginal repairs.) 19th-century red half morocco, monogram of William Henry Miller on spine, edges gilt (some light rubbing). Provenance : William Henry Miller Britwell Court Library (binding), by descent to; Samuel Christie Miller, to; Wakefield Christie Miller; to S.R. Christie Miller. Second edition, reprinting Elizabeth's order of ca 1578 [STC 9187.9]. After the orders to be observed against the infection of the plague is a section giving advice to physicians on medical treatment. These describe the proper airing of houses, perfuming of apparel, medicines, suppositories, bloodletting and measures to be taken if there is any swelling on the body. VERY SCARCE: STC lists only seven copies, with only three in America: the present copy and those at the Folger and Huntington libraries. STC 9209.
