JAMES HOGG 'The Ettrick Shepherd' (1770-1835) Autograph letter as self-folding envelope, signed (''James Hogg''), to George Thornton Esq at the Royal Exchange, 4pp., 4, with manuscript poem of 7 stanzas, 56 lines, signed, inscribed and dated on outer edge of envelope ''17 March 1818. Mr Hogg. Song, for Bonnie laddie, highland laddie''. Framed with double-sided glazing. 9 x 14.5in. (23 x 37cm.) The first stanza reading: "What get ye that silver moon Bonny laddie Highland laddie! That looks sae brew your ?bult aboon?" Bonny laddie Highland laddie! Belted plaid on bonnet ?lihe Bonny laddie Highland laddie! Have ye been at Waterloo? Bonny laddie Highland laddie!" Concluding with a few words to Thornton: "I wrote a few English verses first to day, which were quite an anomaly the burden being so decidedly patch. I like the above better which I send".
