JAMES DANCE] Cricket. An heroic poem: illustrated with the critical observations of Scriblerus Maximus. To which is added an epilogue call'd Bucks have at Ye All. Spoken by Mr. King, at the Theatre Royal in Dublin, in the character of Ranger, in the Suspicious Husband London: for the author, 1770 [but 1771?]. 4to. (8¾ x 6¾in; 227 x 173mm) (title rehinged, some mainly marginal spotting, corners of one or two leaves a little stained), late 19th-century brown half calf (newly rebacked, corners rubbed). Provenance : contemporary ms corrections on pp. 14-15 -- Robert Stratten Holmes (ownership signature on front endpaper dated Liverpool, 7.3.[18]87) -- C.E.M. Wilson (Eagar Catalogue note). Exhibited : Tunbridge Wells Cricket Exhibition. An apparent reissue or reimpression of the 1770 edition (fourth printing) with new title-page. Horace Walpole's copy has the date of publication altered to March, 1771, in manuscript. VERY SCARCE. ESTC locates 5 copies of this issue with the extended subtitle, 2 in the UK (BL and Bodleian), and 3 in North America. cf. Padwick 6445.
