JACQUES DU FOUILLOUX
JACQUES DU FOUILLOUX La Vénerie [and:] Jean de FRANCHÌERES. La Fauconnerie . Paris: Abel l'Angelier, 1606-1607. 2 works in one volume as issued, small 4°, titles in red black with the same woodcut vignette, 101 woodcut illustrations, including 5 full-page, partly hand-coloured in brown (first title re-margined along lower corner, opening leaves and last quires of first work waterstained, quire Bb of second work to end also stained affecting text in places), old calf, marbled edges (rebacked, rubbed and scuffed). Provenance : extensive manuscript annotations in Latin on particular margins carefully preserved by the binder, one leaf with annotations tipped-in -- Monsieur Darragon (signature on blank verso of final leaf) -- Gerald William Lascelles (bookplate). Du Fouilloux's classic of hunting literature combined with Franchières's earlier treatise on hawking. La Vénerie was the first major work on the subject since Gaston Phébus's Livre de chasse , written in the late 14th century, and it remained pre-eminent for two hundred years. This edition used the famed woodcuts from De Marnesz's editions, and follows the text edited by "I.D.S." (generally thought to be Du Fouilloux's friend, Jean de Sansicquet), which added Jean de Clamorgan's "De la Chasse du loup", Charles Estienne and Jean Libault's "La Chasse du conil", and Francesco Carcano's chapter on canine medicine. Schwerdt I, pp. 153, 184; Souhart 153, 195.
