Turkish binding with envelope flap, leather over pasteboards, covers and flap with gilt borders and rectangular decorative panel with a design of cross-work in the form of leaves and with radiating decorations at the corners and at the middle of each cover, skilfully restored. Some minor foxing. Mounted old annotation on inside of upper cover. First edition of the first diwan by this Turkish poet (1785-1829). Born in Istanbul into a family of craftsmen, he became a judge and an active figure in political life. A supporter of reform of the Ottoman regime, he was exiled twice, to Kesan and to Sivas, where he died. His verse is notable for its laconic wit.
