Ivory and silver game box, China, circa 1800. 5 x 9.5 x 5.75 in. (227 x 245 x 148 mm). Intricately carved ivory box. The lid and sides contain carved panels within pierced and scrolled borders; each facia featuring a central panel depicting a scene with pagodas, trees, and boats surrounded by lattice work and flowers and branches. Chinese silver mounts border the edges of the box, and the handles, chased lock, and pierced and chased feet are in the Rococo style. The interior is lined with blue velvet and contains a removable tray filled with numerous circular, rectangular and fish-shaped mother-of-pearl game counters, as well as 4 book-shaped, red, blue, and gilt-decorated straight-grained morocco pull-off playing card cases, each housing a deck of cards. The 4 decks of cards are as follows: one woodblock printed and stencil-colored deck by Hunt & Sons, circa 1810, two decks by Bank Brothers, and one deck by Luigi Adami, Florence, circa 1870.
