ITALY - MONASTERY OF S.PAOLO D'ARGON NEAR BERGAMO, Pianta de Stabili del Rev.mo Monasterio di S.Paolo D'Argon Anno Domini MDCCXXIX . An estate survey compiled by Bernardino Sarzetti, Manuscript on Paper. Bergamo, 1729-31. Large 2° (485 x 355mm). 187 leaves (including 4 blank ff), arms of the monastery on title, 90 SINGLE PAGE AND 24 DOUBLE-PAGE DETAILED ESTATE PLANS, all in sepia ink and watercolours, the plans showing detailed land-use, arable land described, pastures coloured green, various tree symbols denoting orchards and woods, roads and tracks in yellow, ditches and walls in grey, distances along field boundaries marked, each plan with carefully drawn birds-eye drawings of houses, barns and farms, with a finely drawn compass rose containing local views, allegorical figures or emblematic drawings, scale-bars. The closely written text describes the various fields and farms in detail. (Occasional light staining or browning.) Modern red morocco by Johann Strauss, with contemporary painted edges. An unusually large 18th century Italian estate survey in fine condition forming an impressive record of landholding in Lombardy. The ancient Cluniac monastery of S.Paolo d'Argon in Bergamo, Lombardy was founded in 1081 and acquired a great wealth of agricultural and other lands over the centuries. In 1728 the abbot commissioned Bernardino Sarzetti, public notary and land-surveyor of Bergamo, to compile detailed plans of all the properties belonging to the monastery, showing the extent of all land and ancient boundaries as well as adjacent lands. These accomplished plans, each decorated with very unusal and striking compass roses, are accompanied by lengthy descriptions and measurements of the extent of each property and each description is signed by the notary and extremely well indexed. The fine drawings depict fields, woods and forests, rivers and also buildings. The authenticity of the survey is attested by numerous witnesses, presumably neighbours and proprietors of adjacent lands listed on ff 6 and 7. Additions to the text were made as late as 1796. Apparently two copies of this survey were produced, one for use of the monastery, the other for the archives of Bergamo.
