ISIDORE STANISLAS HENRI HELMAN (1743-1806) Faits Mémorables des Empereurs de la Chine. Paris: for the author and M. Ponce, 1788. 4° (27.5 x 20.4cm). Engraved throughout. Title (with library stamp) and 24 hand-coloured engraved plates by Helman after Father Attiret, each with accompanying engraved page of text, the plates with manuscript captions in Russian. (Lacking dedication, some soiling, occasional small marginal tears or neatly repaired holes.) Near-contemporary red morocco gilt, blue silk liners, g.e. (worn and restored). The most luxurious issue of this work, on papier de Hollande , with hand-coloured plates. According to the title page, this issue was originally priced at 48 livres. The work could also be purchased unbound, at 12 livres; in paper wrappers, at 13 livres and 10 francs; unbound but on papier vélin , at 18 livres; or on large paper, to accompany the Batailles de la Chine series, at 18 livres. The work was to be published in four parts, appearing every two months from 15th April 1788 onwards. The plates are based on drawings done by the Jesuit, Father Attiret, on the orders of the Emperor of China, and through the mediation of the Compagnie des Indes. Cohen-de Ricci 479.
