ISHIKAWA, Ryusen (fl.late 17th/early 18th-century). Shinban Bunkan. Edo Oezu [A new and enlarged edition of the Map of Edo]. Edo: Suwaraya Mohee, Shotoku 3 [1713]. Large hand-coloured woodblock printed map of the city of Edo [Tokyo since 1868], West orientated, multiple sheets of native paper joined, 1,170 x 1,280mm. (Light rubbing to folds.) Folding into original blue wrappers with title slip, modern cloth case.

EARLY 18TH-CENTURY JAPANESE MAP OF TOKYO with Edo castle in the centre, the important Buddhist temples and shrines hand-coloured in yellow and often shown graphically, and the cartouche in the South East part illustrating the Kameido area beyond the eastern limit of the city. The Sumida river in the North East part is shown flowing from North to South while Tokyo bay is decorated with small boats.
