IRVING, Washington. Autograph letter signed ("Washington Irving"), to Frederick S. Cezear, Sunnyside, 24 December 1858. 1 page, 8vo, creased from mailing .

IRVING STOCKS HIS TABLE FOR HIS LAST CHRISTMAS A Christmas Eve note asking "for two gallons of your best brandy for table use; which I will thank you to send up by train tomorrow." A lifelong bachelor, Irving nevertheless maintained a full and busy household at his Sunnyside residence, near Tarrytown, from 1832 until his death in November 1859, less than a year from the date of this letter. He lived with his brother Ebenezer and his five nieces. In addition to this warm family companionship, Irving was frequently visited by fellow writers, artists, and other public figures eager to pay their respects to the great author and humorist.
