INSTITORIS, Henricus (ca. 1430-1505) and Jacobus SPRENGER (ca. 1436-1495). Malleus maleficarum . Nuremberg: Anton Koberger 17 March, 1494. Median 4 o (210 x 155 mm). Collation: 8 a-q 8 r 1 0 (1r title, verso blank, 2r author's apologia, 2v bull of Pope Innocent III, Summis desiderantibus affectibus , 3v approbation of Cologne theological faculty, 5v table, 8 blank, a1r text, r9r colophon [variant reading "Nurbergen"], r9v-10 blank). 146 leaves. 45 lines and headline, double column. Types: 14:130G (title, headlines), 15:91G (headings), 21:74G (text). 2- to 7-line initial spaces, some with printed guide-letters. Piece of fallen type printed on d2r, obscuring 3 words. (Occasional browning, small wormholes at end.) Binding : contemporary half pigskin over wooden boards, leather tooled with border of quadruple fillets, floral spray and rosettes (tools not in Kyriss or Schwenke-Sammlung ), vellum quire guards in first and final quires, fore-edge clasp missing, remains of old blue paper spine covering and paper spine labels (a few small wormholes, some wear at spine, corner of front board chipped). Provenance : Jacobus Hartlieb, "dictus Walsporn", of Landau (d. 1504); contemporary bequest inscription on title ( Legavit D. Jacobus hartlib dictus Walsporn Decanus S. Trinitatis ) -- [Lathrop Harper, cat. 239 no. 9] Fourth edition of the first encyclopedia of witchcraft. It was compiled by Dominican papal inquisitors for Germany in response to a bull against heresy promulgated by Pope Innocent VIII, which called for severe measures against witchcraft. Their handbook outlines alleged practices of witches' sabbaths, intercourse with the devil, casting spells, etc., and details procedures for inquisitors to follow in conducting witchraft investigations and trials. The original owner of this volume, Jakob Hartlieb, was the author of the popular Scherzrede, De fide meretricum in suos amatores , first published in 1505.
