INNOCENT XII (1615-1700)] -- VALESIO, Giovanni Luigi (c. 1583-1633). Apparato funebre dell'anniversario à Gregorio XV. Celebrato in Bologna á XXIV. de Luglio M.DC.XXIV . Bologna: Vittorio Benacci, 1624.
INNOCENT XII (1615-1700)] -- VALESIO, Giovanni Luigi (c. 1583-1633). Apparato funebre dell'anniversario à Gregorio XV. Celebrato in Bologna á XXIV. de Luglio M.DC.XXIV . Bologna: Vittorio Benacci, 1624. 2° (312 x 219mm). Woodcut arms on title, 8 engraved plates of which 3 folding. (Very lightly soiled.) ROMAN BINDING FOR POPE INNOCENT XII PROBABLY BY GREGORIO AND GIOVANNI ANDREOLI c. 1691-1700, contemporary red morocco, sides elaborately gilt with floriate roll borders, an architectural frame and putti centering the arms of Pope Innocent XII built up from small tools, smooth spine gilt, modern red cloth box (endpapers renewed, corners and spine ends lightly rubbed, a few small stains on the back). Provenance : Pope Innocent XII (Antonio Pignatelli, 1615-1700, binding) -- Oliver Henry Perkins (book label) -- Raymond J. Schweizer (book label) -- purchased from Emil Offenbacher, 1 April 1965 -- Cornelius Hauck Collection (book ticket; sold, Christie's 27 June 2006). POPE INNOCENT XII'S COPY OF VALESIO'S SCARCE FÊTE BOOK. As the binding is Roman and not Bolognan, and the Pope's arms are composed and not impressed from a block, the brothers Andreoli are the probable binders. The winged putti tools are found on other examples from the Vatican Bindery, which was operated by the Andreolis, a shop formerly called the Rospigliosi Bindery after one of its patrons; see Legatura Romana Barocca (1991) pl. XI. The Pope's family arms are composed of three kettles, or pigna in Italian, an allusion to the Pope's family name Pignatelli. Valesio's work describes and illustrates the celebrations on the anniversary of the death of Pope Gregory XV (d. 1623) which were held in his native Bologna under the auspices of Cardinal Ludovisi. The fine engravings show the funeral decorations in the Cathedral of Bologna. Berlin Kat. 3202; Cicognara 1431.
