Initial I cut from a LARGE-FORMAT ILLUMINATED MANUSCRIPT GRADUAL ON VELLUM. [Spain, early 16th century]. Decorative initial and partial text, 152 x 290 mm. (6 x 11 1/2 in.); initial in lavender modelled in purple and white, on a rectangular brown gold-speckled ground (135 x 90 mm.), flanked by four blue flowers on green stems; at right and on verso, music consisting of square neumes on a five-line red stave; text in large gothic rotunda script. Slight flaking or rubbing of pigment, text and neumes rubbed on verso; tipped to a velvet backing . The text cited in the rubric, Laetabitur deserta (Is. 35), is the second reading for Mass on Saturday of Ember Week in Advent. It is followed by the gradual In sole posuit tabernaculum suum: et ipse tamquam sponsus procedens de thalamo suo , a portion of which (... sus proce ...) appears on the verso of this cutting. Music written on a five line stave usually, though not always, indicates a date after 1500.
