The car was presented by Vignale at the 1968 Turin Motor Show as a prototype coupé with two doors and four-seater to replace the Sebring model. The name "Indy" was chosen to commemorate the two victories obtained by Maserati at the Indianapolis 500 Miles in 1939 and 1940.
