Indian Mutiny , Wajid Ali Shah (King of Oudh), secretarial letter, in English, to an anonymous recipient 'My dear friend, I am sure you have heard of the sad catastrophe which has befallen me ... namely, the sequestration of Oude, by the Honourable East India company. They have illegally taken possession of my hereditary Empire, disposed of my valuable furniture and property at a considerable loss and destroyed my magnificent Palaces ... ' the King continues that he is sending his mother 'Her Most Gracious Majesty', his brother, his son 'my true and rightful heir', together with his attorney, to prosecute his suit in London, signed by the King in Urdu, 2 pages in ink, 4to [25 x 21 cm], Garden Reach [Calcutta], 3 July 1856 The desposition of the King of Oudh, Wajid Ali Shah, by the Governor General, Lord Dalhousie, was one of the chief causes of the Indian Mutiny of 1857. The defence of the British Residency at Lucknow, the capital of Oudh, was one of the central events of the mutiny. Sold with the lot is a letter from NAHUR SINGH, RAJAH OF BULLUBGARH , to the Governor General of India, Lord Ellenborough, in London, in a secretarial hand, in English, 2 pp within gilt-decorated borders, concerning his estates in danger of being annexed by 'Local Officers of the British Government', 4to [26.5 x 21.5], seal stamp, Bullubgarh, Delhi Territory, 22 March 1856
