Title: In totum Geneseos Librum Homiliae Sexagintasex Author: Johannes Chrysostomus, Saint Place: Basil Publisher: Cratandrum Date: 1523 Description: [3], 201 ff. Lacking title leaf (A1). (Folio) 31.5x20.5 cm (12½x8½"), modern library cloth, spine lettered in gilt. An early manuscript leaf with rubricated initial letters from an undetermined work is bound in at the rear. John Chrysostom (c. 347–407), Archbishop of Constantinople, was an important Early Church Father. He is known for his eloquence in preaching and public speaking, his denunciation of abuse of authority by both ecclesiastical and political leaders, the Divine Liturgy of St. John Chrysostom, and his ascetic sensibilities. After his death in 407 (or, according to some sources, during his life) he was given the Greek epithet chrysostomos, meaning "golden mouthed" in English, and Anglicized to Chrysostom. The Orthodox and Eastern Catholic Churches honor him as a saint and count him among the Three Holy Hierarchs, together with Basil the Great and Gregory Nazianzus. He is recognized by the Eastern Orthodox Church and the Catholic Church as a saint and as a Doctor of the Church. De-accessioned from the Pacific School of Religion, with bookplate, rear endpaper pocket, rubberstamps, spine label. Lot Amendments Condition: Inked notes in margins throughout in a neat hand, paper a bit browned, soiling to a few leaves; very good. Item number: 245820
