Beschreibung:

In talks on full diplomatic relations Deng Xiaoping, 9 July 1978 DENG XIAOPING (1904-1997). Signed Photograph of Deng seated with Congressmen Lester Wolff, signed by both at bottom center [Beijing, 9 July 1978]. Gelatin silver print, 130 x 200mm (minor edge wear and crease at bottom left corner). A rare signed photograph of Deng Xiaoping during a pivotal meeting in the history of Chinese American relations. Pictured together with Congressman Lester L. Wolff, chairman of the House International Relations Subcommittee on Asian and Pacific Affairs, the two discussed a range of matters, but most notably, the establishment of full diplomatic relations between the two nations, an issue complicated by U.S. recognition of the Republic of China (Taiwan). During the July 1978 meeting in Beijing, Deng requested that Wolff deliver a verbal message to President Carter on his conditions for the establishment of formal ties (as quoted by the congressman): "Tell Carter to put the Taiwan question aside. Taiwan will fall like a ripe apple from the tree." On 1 January 1979, Jimmy Carter signed The Joint Communiqué on the Establishment of Diplomatic Relations, which established formal ties between the United States and the People's Republic of China. On the same day, the U.S. ended diplomatic recognition of the Republic of China (Taiwan), accomodating the PRC's "One China" policy. Provenance: Hon. Lester L. Wolff. Please note this lot is the property of a private individual.
