In-f° : [20]-CCCCXLV lvs (marginal dampstains except one larger in the end of the vol., marginal wormholes in the beginning, some lvs slightly yellowed in the beginning, rare foxing, rare marginal tears, rare lvs stained). Contemporary binding : blind stamped pigskin on wooden boards, boards decorated with fillets and roll-stamps (one with portraits), ribbed spine, blue edges (clasps lacking, wormholes, small stains, rest of guards, lower edges and corners dulled, inside joint broken). Illustrated by Anton Woensam with : an historiated frame on the title figuring the Evangelists, the four Church Fathers, God above and the portrait of Charles V and Ferdinand I with the coat of arms of the Holy Roman Empire below,- and ornemental initials except one historiated and large at the dedication figuring the presentation of the book to Ferdinand. After graduating in Law and Divinity in Siena, Nausea (c. 1496-1552) served as secretary for Cardinal Lorenzo Campeggio a.o. at the Diet of Nuremberg and the convention of Ratisbon. He worked for the reunion of Lutherans with the Catholics and asked Rome, together with prelates, to permit the clergy to marry and the laity to use communion cup. He also unsuccessfully tried to return Melanchthon to Roman Catholicism. He was also named bishop of Vienna and participated in the delibrations, especially on Sacraments, when the Council of Trent reopened in 1551. # Adams N-86; # Soltész N-56; # USTC 658291; # VD 16 N 229; # not in Machiels.
