in an initial on a leaf from an illuminated Psalter, in Latin on parchment, plus another leaf from an illuminated Book of Hours on parchment [thirteenth and fifteenth century] Two leaves: (a) Leaf from an illuminated Psalter with a large initial ‘D’ (opening “Domine exaudi orationem meam ...”, Psalm 101) in blue with scalloping white penwork, enclosing a clean-shaven and young saint with a red halo, holding up a book clutched in the fold of his blue cloak (compare the similar figures in manuscripts produced in Thérouanne from 1270-1300), all on a brightly burnished gold ground, and within a coloured and gold frame with the ascender of the letter in the same extending along the upper margin, small initials in blue or liquid gold, 19 lines in an early gothic bookhand, trimmed at top with loss of edge of ascender of initial, northern France, last decades of thirteenth century, 115 by 90mm.; (b) Leaf from a Book of Hours with full decorated border of rinceaux terminating in gold ivy leaves enclosing a small green hillock with a foliage spray with flower heads, single column, initials in liquid gold on coloured grounds, red rubrics, 16 lines in 2 sizes of fine gothic script, northern France, c. 1430-40, 202 by 150mm; both mounted in large gilt frames Another leaf from item (a) was Maggs, cat.1366, European Bulletin 23, no.14, for £2800.
