Sabalites sp. Eocene Green River Formation, Wyoming Over fifty million years ago, the desert sediments of Southwest Wyoming lay under a freshwater lake system within the subtropical environment of the Eocene. Similar in climate to modern-day Florida, the area supported an abundance of fishes, turtles, crocodiles and other aquatic creatures. Considered rare, and arguably the most spectacular examples of the flora of the period, are the Green River palm fronds, distinctive reminders of the primitive and beautiful Eocene environment. The present pair of specimens is the positive/negative split of a single frond producing a spectacular pair of opposing murals. The magnificent specimens are seen in the natural, irregularly shaped limestone matrix in which they were encased for over fifty million years. Murals measure 58 x 48 x 2in and 59 47 x 2in
