IMPORTANT WATERFORD COMMERCIAL ARCHIVE An important and interesting Archive of material mostly relating to the White family of Waterford City. The material includes the following: Letter-book of Thomas White 1779-1787 · This is a substantial volume, containing copies of the letters received by Thomas White general merchant in Waterford, over an eight-year period. There are 374 double pages, and the volume begins with an alphabetical index of correspondents. These include some continental firms such as John Barton of Bordeaux, but most are from Ireland or Britain, particularly the firm of James Sutton in London. At the back is a series of documents relating to the bankruptcy of Peter Mooney of Waterford in 1785. Leases and similar (13 items) · Mostly written on vellum. They deal mainly with leases of property in Waterford, especially in King St. and Queen St. (now O’Connell St.), Hanover St., Anne St. and Summer Hill. A deed of 1836 concerns the lease of a dwelling house at Parkswood (near Passage East). Some of the deeds include detailed schedules of premises, and two have maps attached. One deed of 1800 grants a dwelling house in Queen St. to Richard Jacob, “ship’s chandler” (father of the founders of Jacob’s Biscuits). Most of the deeds involve the Jacob family, but there are other Quaker names such as Ramsey, Gatchell, Penrose and Nevins. · In one especially interesting deed of 1828 John Cower, attorney, acknowledges the receipt of £215 from Samuel White, as compensation for the annoyance (noise, smoke, ashes and dirt) caused by White’s steam engine, which is used for the grinding of corn and manufacture of starch and blue at his premises in King St. / Hanover St. White agrees not to erect a more powerful steam engine. Shipping Records (4 items) · Mortgage of the ship William the Tenth, now being built by Albert White in Ferrybank, to Thomas Robinson White and Henry White 1860. · Three certificates from Lloyds and the Shipowners’ Protection Association granted to John Angel of Waterford in connection with the Stormy Petrel, 1886-1889. Personal and genealogical documents (5 items) · Marriage settlement of Joseph Jacob and Maria Penrose, Waterford, 1815, with a long schedule of assets. · Certificates of the freedom of Waterford granted in 1817 to Samuel White, son of Thomas, and in 1854 to Thomas Robinson White, son of Samuel, deceased. Both documents have the seal of Waterford Corporation, in good condition. · Proclamation of the marriage at the Quaker Meeting in Cork of Thomas Robinson White of Waterford and Sarah Newsom of Cork, 1839. Signed by 73 witnesses. Dates of the birth of four children written on back, 1840-1851. · Will of Richard Allen of Newtown, Waterford City, 1872. Probate granted in 1873 to Samuel White of King St., executor. Letters (34 items) · Thirty letters written in 1873 to Samuel White of Waterford. Most are Samuel Bewley of Dublin, S. Barcroft Haughton of Cork, and Anna Grubb of Clonmel. Also John Finch Marsh of Croydon and Sarah Ridgway of Cliff Cottage, Tramore. Fourteen letters have penny-red stamps. Several envelopes have re-sealed owing to damp. · Also 2 late 19th century postcards and 2 empty envelopes. Newspapers (6 items) · 2 issues of the Waterford Chronicle, 1880, and 4 of the Waterford Standard, 1880, 1889, 1912. As an Archive, w.a.f. (1)
