Beschreibung:

Imperial Italian Neoclassical Fruitwood, Part Ebonized and Parcel Gilt Cheval Glass Circa 1805 The beveled rectangular mirror plate within a gilt twist slip and molded frame swiveling between two Egyptian headed term supports ending in feet, the trestle support joined by a pierced geometric stretcher centered by a lion's head, the shaped stepped bases on casters, bearing a printed and inked paper label Palazzo R di Bologna Appart de L/Imperative Camere N. 119 N. 645 and bearing brands N within a circle and two stenciled initials M.R. Height 71 1/2 inches (1.81 m), width 48 inches (1.22 m), depth 23 inches (58.4 cm). Provenance: Presumably Empress Josephine, Palazzo Reale di Bologna Napoleon was crowned King of Italy in 1805 with the Iron Crown of Lombardy in the Duomo of Milan by Cardinal Giovanni Battista Caprara Montecuccoli (Bologna 1733 - Paris 1810), named bishop of Milan in 1802. It is interesting to note that Cardinal Caprara is included in Jacques Louis David's Coronation of Napoleon I, created between 1805-1807. The Cardinal is depicted standing next to the seated figure of Pope Pius VII, and as such, was shown as an influential person in both the Imperial and Papal circles. In November of 1806, Napoleon bought the Cardinal's family palazzo from Count Carlo Caprara, together with furniture and the collection of paintings for the large sum of 714,740 lire and renamed it the Palazzo Reale di Bologna. In 1807, Napoleon gave the palace to Josephine Eugenie de Beauharnais (daughter of Prince Eugene, Viceroy of Italy, the son of Josephine Beauharnais, to whom Napoleon was first married) at the time of her birth, and in 1808 he bestowed upon her the title of Princess of Bologna. The 'M. R' brand possibly refers to the Mobilier Royal; there are other pieces of furniture which also include that brand as well as the brand of a crowned N within a circle. C
Good restored condition, crack to mirror plate at lower left corner, one Egyptian head replaced, old marks and scratches, gilding refreshed, chips to edges, lifting and age cracks to veneers at back of mirror, chips to feet at base of trestle support
