ILLUMINATED MANUSCRIPT LEAVES, 13th century -- JUSTINIANUS I, Emperor (483-565), Corpus Juris Civilis , in Latin, part-folio, with THREE ZOOMORPHIC AND INHABITED INITIALS from an illuminated manuscript on vellum [Bologna, c.1300-1325], recovered from a binding. (258 x 260mm), two columns of 25 lines in brown ink in a round gothic bookhand, with marginal gloss, overall justification: 137 x 237mm, rubrics in red, one-line initials in red, four-line paraphs in blue, the recto with large illuminated initial painted in light and dark blues, orange and yellow and heightened in white, with a horse's head and extensive scrolling foliate stave, the verso with two similar initials, one with an angel, the other with a spear-toting grotesque (initials on verso with loss of pigment, staining to edges, tears and losses at fold through column of gloss). Glazed on both sides, framed. with TWO ILLUMINATED INITIALS on a fragment from a manuscript BIBLE on vellum [Paris, third quarter 13th century]. (150 x 100mm), two columns of 46 lines written in brown ink in a small gothic bookhand between four verticals and 47 horizontals ruled in plummet, justification: 98 x 64mm, marginal corrections and annotations, text comprising Joshua, prologue and chapters I-II verse 10, rubrics in red, versal initials touched red, letters of running heading and chapter number in blue and red, two-line decorated initial on verso in blue with flamboyant page-high flourishing of blue and red, two five-line illuminated initials in pink, blue, orange and gold, with foliate infills and an animal head (losses to margins, outer corners cut down). Glazed on both sides, gilt gesso frame. (2)
