Ian Fleming
Typed letter signed, to George Murray Levick, confirming that they do not require the hut at Shlignich (in Scotland), informing him that Admiral Godfrey read his article on dehydrated foods, telling him to come and see him when he is in London
One page, 8vo, stamped in red 'PERSONAL', with Admiralty blind stamp, in envelope with 'On His Majesty's Service' and 'PERSONAL' to front, two wax seals to reverse, 11 February 1943
LETTERS BY FLEMING FROM THIS PERIOD ARE ESPECIALLY SCARCE.
This early letter to Commander George Murray Levick was sent from Commander Ian Fleming when he was working during the war in naval intelligence. In July 1939 Fleming joined the R.N.V.R. as Lieutenant (Special Branch), Section 17, working in Room 39 at the Admiralty, Whitehall. Within a year he had been promoted to Commander, the same naval rank bestowed upon James Bond. Official letters by Fleming from this period are exceptionally rare; the majority were top secret and remain inaccessible.
George Murray Levick was the ship's surgeon abroad the Terra Nova on Scott's final Antarctic expedition. He served in the Grand Fleet during the First World War and was recalled for the Second World War, where he trained commandos in the Scottish Highlands. Schlignich was the location of a military training camp in Scotland.
