I.A. Sent[enti]ae, Praec[ept]a, Dictaque Notab[ili]a. Ad Medicina[m] specctantia e[x] Libris nobilissimorum atque optimorum medicorum excerpta , dictionary of medical definitions, in Latin, MANUSCRIPT ON PAPER [Italy, perhaps Florence, early 17th century] 220 x 166mm. 240 leaves: 1-15 1 6, including 45 blanks, written in brown ink in an irregular cursive hand in up to 26 lines (variable light spotting and offsetting). Contemporary limp vellum (wrinkled and darkened, 7 small splits at extremities, lacking ties). This is a practical manual and reference aid, presumably compiled by a medical practitioner for his own use. Brief definitions of conditions, body parts, treatments and authorities are arranged in alphabetical order giving precise reference to source books -- frequently Hippocrates and Galen -- for a fuller account and treatment. Written in a different hand on the final verso is an account of the thunder storm of the night of 27 January 1600 when the cross and brass orb from the cupola of Florence Cathedral was struck by lightning and came crashing down. It is annotated by the compiler of the medical texts remarking on how alarming and damaging an event it was.
