Collation: a-f 8 g 1 0 (a1 blank, a2r dedication to M. Fabius [Quintilianus?], a3r text, g9r commendatory poem by Jacobus Sentinus, g10r poem and verse colophon by Johannes Santritter, g10v blank). 58 leaves. 31 lines. Types 3:91G (text), 7:92G (heading on a2r), 91 Gk (a few words). Title on a2r red-printed, 11-, 7-, 5- and 3-line white-on-black woodcut initials. 47 half-page woodcuts, probably designed by Santritter, of the constellation and planet figures. A few of the woodcuts partially colored by an early hand. (Small marginal stains to title and to fol. f1, bifolia e1.8 and e2.7 slightly darkened, short marginal tear to b1, g1 rehinged, g9-10 adhered at gutter, trace of removed bookplate on g10, occasional minor marginal foxing and soiling.) 19th-century boards covered in vellum from a 14th-century theological or philosophical manuscript. Provenance : Thomas Ebersarg (contemporary inscription on initial blank; contemporary marginalia on c8v); Biblioth. Coll. Widens. (inscription on first page, dated 1854). Second edition, FIRST ILLUSTRATED EDITION. The 1475 Ferrara edition included blank spaces intended to be illustrated by hand. The attractive woodcuts in the present edition are the first printed illustrations of the ancient figures of the constellations and the planets (including the sun and the moon). Ratdolt re-used the blocks for his reprint of 1485 and for his Augsburg, 1488 edition of Angelus, Astrolabium . The traditional attribution of the text to Caius Julius Hyginus, librarian of the Palatine Library and friend of Ovid's, is incorrect. Hyginus' work is principally devoted to the myths and iconography of the constellations, and is derived from the Phaenomena of Aratos (310-240 B.C), or on a now-lost compendium based on Aratos.
