Beschreibung:

HUXLEY, Aldous Leonard (1894-1963). Typescript of 'Two or Three Graces', comprising four stories, n.p., n.d. [1926], typed by Huxley himself with cancellations and errors, corrected and emended in autograph, and annotated in pencil by an editor for the printer, 103 pages, 4to (dust-stained, frayed at edges); green morocco-backed cloth case. Provenance : purchased from Scribners, New York, 6 November 1945, $63. The typescript includes the long story 'Two or Three Graces' (74 pages) which gives its name to the book, including a portrait based on D.H. Lawrence, disguised as 'Kingham' who makes scenes and rails against the English middle classes. The three shorter tales are 'Half-Holiday' (8 pages), 'The Monocle' (12 pages) and 'Fairy Godmother' (6 pages, the title in autograph and the original, 'The Benefactress', cancelled), the disconcerting story of the exploitation of an orphan by her mother's rich and unpleasant friend, Mrs Escobar. Aldous Huxley taught himself to type as a schoolboy, when the almost complete loss of his sight made hand-writing impossible. His literary work was almost invariably composed on the typewriter.
