HUTH, Henry (1815-1878) and Alfred Henry HUTH (1850-1910) -- Catalogue of the Famous Library of Printed Books, Illuminated Manuscripts, Autograph Letters and Engravings... London: Sotheby, Wilkinson, and Hodge, 1911-1920. 9 parts (of 11) in 6 volumes, 4 o. Numerous plates in text (some light chipping to a few colored plates.) (Some light spotting at edges.) Brown half morocco, spines gilt-lettered, t.e.g., original wrappers bound in at the end of each volume (some minor scuffing). Provenance : Wilfred Merton (bookplate). Limited issue on fine paper, with extra colored plates and a printed price list with buyers' names for each portion. The sale of the Huth library, started by Henry Huth and greatly augmented by his son, Alfred, contained 8357 lots and totalled over £350,000. In Alfred Huth's will, he stipulated that, should his heirs decide after his death to sell his library, the trustees of the British Museum should have the right to select fifty volumes from the collection. He specified that the books be marked Huth Bequest and that a catalogue of them be published, which the British Museum did in 1912. DNB. (6)
