large archive of letters, documents, manuscript diary, and more. Personal file of General Alfred E. Bradley (1864-1922), Chief Surgeon of the AEF in France during WWI. Most of the letters are from notables in the medical field, including those from the U.S. and British military. Names include Sir Wm. Osler, Wm. Gorgas, Matthew Ireland, Gen. H.L. Gildchrist, D. Pearce Penhallow, Lady Nancy Astor, Mrs. (Whitelaw) Reid, Frank A. Walker, Sir Paul Vinogradoff, Henry H.M. Lyle, C.H. Browning, and many others. Many of the letters have wonderful content with original hand-drawn diagrams. Blueprints for scheme to organize the medical department of the AEF, many typed letters dealing with the U.S. Medical staff studying with British, French and Canadian counterparts in order to get up to speed with those organizations, equipment invoices for all types of items from the U.S. Chief of Ordnance including horse drawn items and tack. Many handwritten notes by Bradley. Also included are many carbon copies of reports with his handwritten comments in margins, covering topics such as trench fever, malaria, yellow fever, gas poisoning, scurvy surgical problems, wounds, statistics on wounded. The diary gives a detailed account of who he met and what he witnessed during the war, with some very disturbing details about the horrors of this war are included. Archive fills three large legal accordion binders. Several illustrated pamphlets for various types of army transport vehicles including horse drawn ambulances. Letters and signed contracts for leasing living quarters in London from the London Mayors office. Reoprt on food piosining case in POW camp housing German soldiers. There are circa 300 letters to and from Bradley, most are TLs or TLsS, many are manuscript and many are carbon copies. Lot also includes many other military documents and associated pamphlets. Alfred E. Bradley (1864-1922) was born in Jamestown, New York, and graduated from Jefferson Medical College in 1887; during the same year, he married Letitia Follett. Dr. Bradley entered the Army medical corps the following year. His first commission was service as First Lieutenant and Assistant Surgeon at David's Island, New York Harbor, later known as Fort Slocum. He later served at Fort Omaha, Nebraska and Fort Sully, South Dakota, with temporary duties at the Bellevue Rifle Range and the Sioux uprising at the Rose Bud Indian Agency. He became an Army Captain in 1893 and moved on to Fort Custer and Fort Yellowstone. During the Spanish-American War and the Philippine Insurrection, Bradley served on a hospital ship that traveled to Cuba, Puerto Rico, Gibraltar, Japan, and Hawaii. He later served at Fort Snelling, Minnesota, as Attending Surgeon in the Philippines, at Jefferson Barracks, Missouri, as Commanding Officer of the division hospital in the Philippines, at the Grand Army of the Republic encampment of Civil War veterans at Gettysburg, at Governor's Island, New York, in England as Military Observer with the British and in France as First Chief Surgeon with the American Expeditionary Force during World War I. Bradley was awarded the Distinguished Service Medal for his services abroad. Bradley reached the rank of Brigadier General, but was returned to his previous rank of Colonel following a long period of illness. Recurrent illnesses plagued him throughout 1918 and 1919, and he retired from the military in March 1920. Bradley died in 1922 and was buried with military honors at Arlington National Cemetery, Section 1, Grave 196. (http://www.arlingtoncemetery.net/aebradley.htm).
