[HUDDART, Joseph (1741-1816)] The Oriental Navigator, or New Directions for Sailing to and from the East Indies... to which is added the India Officers and Traders Guide in purchasing the Drugs and Spices of Asia and the East Indies. Philadelphia: James Humphreys 1801. First American edition. Huddart's pilot was first published in London in 1794 by Laurie & Whittle and was a very useful book upon its publication for the blossoming American-China trade route headed by such merchants as Robert Morris of Philadelphia. The Oriental Navigator was based upon the navigational experiences of officers in the East India Company and from the French edition of de Mannevillette's 'French Neptune Oriental.' Joseph Huddart was one of England's foremost hydrographers, a successful sea captain, entrepreneur and inventor. Between approximately 1777-1785 he routinely navigated the oriental waters between India and China. Ferguson 337a ('This appears to be the first American publication on the Eastern trade routes'); Shaw & Shoemaker 682. Octavo (217 x 137mm). Errata leaf with publisher's advertisement on verso at end (some occasional offsetting from pressed flowers, some occasional spotting and staining). Contemporary sheep (joints repaired). Provenance: John Pinkets (early inscription on front pastedown) – The Frank S. Streeter Library (sold Christie's New York 16-17 April 2007 lot 270).
