An autograph transcript by the poet of the last (of five) stanzas of her celebrated "Battle Hymn of the Republic." Reading "In the beauty of the lilies Christ was born across the sea With a glory in his bosom that transfigures you and me; As he died to make men holy, let us die to make man free While God is marching on!" Howe's anthem, written in a semi-darkened hotel in Washington D.C. in 1861 after a visit to President Lincoln and a tour of Union army camps, was first published in the Atlantic Monthly in February 1862. It was soon being widely sung to the well-known camptown meeting tune popularly known as "John Brown's Body," and became the veritable anthem of the Union Army, sung on the march in every theatre of the war. (Howe's original manuscript was sold at Christie's, 17 May 1989, lot 279, for $220,000).
