HOUDINI, Harry (1874-1926). Miracle Mongers and Their Methods: A Complete Exposé of the Modus Operandi of Fire Eaters, Heat Resisters, Poison Eaters, Venomous Reptile Defiers, Sword Swallowers, Human Ostriches, Strong Men, Etc . New York: E.P. Dutton & Co., (1920). 8 o . Illustrated. (Some pale spotting to title.) Original publisher's light brown cloth, lettered in black (some minor soiling and light wear); front panel from original dust jacket tipped-in. Provenance : W.S. Davis, magician and friend of Houdini (presentation inscription from Houdini). FIRST EDITION, PRESENTATION COPY, INSCRIBED BY HOUDINI TO FELLOW-MAGICIAN AND SPIRITUALIST DEBUNKER W.S. DAVIS on the front free endpaper: "To W.S. Davis Best wishes from the author Houdini Jan 26/21." In his book A Magician Amng the Spirits , Houdini credits Davis for his work debunking the Italian Eusapia Palladino, who Houdini described "has to her credit the successful deception of more philosophic and scientific men than any other known medium, being regarded by some as the most famous of them all, notwithstanding the fact that she seems to have made no pretence of producing the class of miracles claimed by D. D. Home and many others" (p. 54). In the chapter he devoted to debunking this medium Houdini credits his fellow magician and friend Davis for uncovering her methods which had gone undetected for over twenty years. Following her arrival in New York in 1908, a group of skeptical Columbia professors arranged for a series of seances in an attempt to expose her as they were certain she was cheating but unable to prove it. As an ex-medium himself, Davis was able to expose her by explaining and demonstrating her methods for them. In a letter from June 22, 1923, Davis wrote Houdini: "Eusapia was one of the world's greatest mountebanks. Her dupes were our foremost men of learning-they were not of the rabble. She was the greatest mountebank produced by modern Spiritism, and she duped more scientists than any other medium" (quoted in A Magician Among the Spirits , p. 59). A FINE ASSOCIATION COPY.
