Beschreibung:

HORSEMANSHIP AND HORSE FURNITURE, MANUSCRIPT ON PAPER [France or Italy, end of the 16th century] 2°, 297 x 200mm. 64 leaves [i.e. 128 pages], containing 2 pages of text at end and 123 FULL-PAGE PEN-AND-INK ILLUSTRATIONS, INCLUDING 13 OF HORSEMANSHIP. All the drawings are in a bistre ink, shaded and heightened with indigo watercolour (the outer margins are often cropped, slightly affecting many drawings). 18th century French calf, gilt spine. The contents of this volume comprise a baroque cartouche (f.1), St. George on horseback (f.1v), the initials PN within a wreath (f.2) followed by 3 pages of horsemanship and one of two noble ladies (ff.2v-5). The remaining pages contain extra-ordinary horse furniture, and ff.57-61 showing representations of duelling, jousting and various exercises on horse. The two pages of text at end have "Memoire pour ung cartier" indicating the method of shoeing horses, and veterinary recipes. The watermark on most leaves is either a crowned dolphin or a heart containing the initials GG, surmounted by the figure 4 [Briquet 5891, c. 1586-91, Ardennes]. PROVENANCE: Huzard stamp on f.1 (catalogue 1843, III no. 4947), acquired by Bachelier and sold to Baron de Curnieu in 1867.
