HORAE, use of Sarum, in Latin. Hore beate virginiae marie ad usum Sarum . [Paris: Jean Jehannot?, ca 1500].
HORAE, use of Sarum, in Latin. Hore beate virginiae marie ad usum Sarum . [Paris: Jean Jehannot?, ca 1500]. 8 o (171 x 107 mm). PRINTED ON VELLUM. Gothic type. Anatomical man woodcut, four full-page illustrations and numerous smaller woodcuts (one cut out), ALL PAINTED AND ILLUMINATED BY A CONTEMPORARY HAND. (Lacking 11 leaves: 2 leaves in quire B, 2 in C, 5 in D, E2 and L5.) English 18th-century red morocco gilt. Provenance : Richard and Elizabeth Blount (16th-century English inscriptions on last leaf); Henry White Litchfield (9 March 1806 ownership inscription on front free endpaper); Lewis Way, Stanisted (armorial bookplate); George Dunn of Wooley Hall (bookplate; his sale 4 February 1914, lot 1228); acquired from Goodspeed's Book Shop, 1969. Due to the heavy opaque coloring of the illustrations, it is difficult to determine if the illustrations are original illuminations or if there are cuts underneath. In the sale of the Dunn catalogue, they were described as painted and illuminated woodcuts, but it is possible that original illuminations were made in the blank portions of the leaves. There is the device of the Holy Grail on the title, and the full-page illustrations represent The Presentation in the Temple, Coronation of the Virgin, Bathsheba and Death slaying a king. A report by Katharine T. Pantzer suggests Jean Jehannot as the printer and the date of 1500 or a year or two later. Fact and Fantasy 9.
