HORAE, use of Rome, in Latin and French. Ces presents heures a lusaige de Rome . Paris: Philippe Pigouchet for Simon Vostre ca 1502.
HORAE, use of Rome, in Latin and French. Ces presents heures a lusaige de Rome . Paris: Philippe Pigouchet for Simon Vostre ca 1502. 4 o (256 x 164 mm). Collation : A-L 8 M 1 0 . 98 leaves. Gothic type. Title-page within woodcut borders, enclosing Vostre's device, Anatomical Man cut on A2r and 25 woodcuts of three different styles, each printed within woodcut architectural border, text within historiated borders containing smaller cuts of Saints and other figures, Dance of Death subjects on H2-I5. Initials and capitals colored in red and blue and heightened with gold. (Title with horizontal repaired tear crossing text, Small marginal loss on B3, C1, E5 and K1 with small marginal tears just crossing text, occasional pale spotting.) Contemporary French blindstamped calf, the covers with Evangelists and floral blocks (worn). Provenance : acquired from August Laube, 1971. The almanac for the years 1502-1520. Fairfax Murray notes that of the larger cuts, eight are from Vostre's second set, 14 are from his third set and 3 are of his fourth set, perhaps used here for the first time. The cuts of set 3 are octavo in size, "distinguished by their finer finish the style shewing Renaissance influence." These cuts have been enlarged in this edition by the addition of architectural borders, "peculiar for their shaded backgrounds (beyond the outlines of the design) which are rendered in two forms of cross-hatching." Descriptions of all the marginal cuts are given in French verse in this edition, unlike any of Vostre's earlier editions. Bohatta 747; Fairfax Murray French 257; Lacombe 116.
