Paris: the widow of Thielman Kerver, 16 February 1522 [Calendar 1523-1536]. 4 o (223 x 146 mm). PRINTED ON VELLUM. Text in Latin, captions in French. Collation: A-P 8 Q 4 ; aa 8 . 132 leaves. Gothic type. Title with large cut within architectural border incorporating Kerver's unicorn device (Renouard 87), anatomical man cut, arms of the Passion cut, 12 half-page cuts in the Calendar, 46 large cuts within architectural borders, and 30 small cuts of Saints, ALL FINELY ILLUMINATED AND HIEGHTENED WITH GOLD, AND WITH ELABORATE GOLD BORDERS ADDED TO THE TEXT LEAVES. Ruled in red, initials in red, blue and gold. 17th-century French calf gilt (joints worn). Provenance : CONTEMPORARY UNIDENTIFIED ILLUMINATED ARMS ON TITLE AND IN THREE BORDERS: azure a chevron or between 3 5-foils argent , motto "Spes Mea Deus" in borders on K5 and L7 -- Nicolay Family, Château de Bercy, until 1860, when the contents were sold at auction, the house demolished the following year -- Ambroise Firmin-Didot-(his sale June 1882, lot 88, purchased by Frederick Startridge Ellis and David White New York, with manuscript note pasted on front free endpaper noting sale by them in December 1882 for £105) -- acquired from Marlborough Rare Books 1984. A SUPERBLY ILLUMINATED COPY, each woodcut richly colored and within illuminated borders, all heightened with gold. The illuminator has enhanced the images considerably, modifying many of the figures and scenes with rich and vibrant detail to create the effect of miniatures. The text leaves are each surrounded by red and gold borders with scrollwork in the lower margins that incorporate animals, flowers and other subjects, including in several cases the arms of the original owner.
