HORAE -- SENAULT, Louis (active 1680-1690). Heures nouvelles dédiées a Madame La Dauphine . Paris: by the author; and Versailles: N. Duval (ca 1680). 8 o in 4s (179 x 122 mm). Engraved throughout, including title, dedication and 260 pages. Decorated with numerous borders, vignettes, head- and tail-pieces, and initials. Contemporary red morocco, covers gilt with wide dentelle border of flowers and foliage, in the style of Bisiaux, the arms and motto of Madame du Barry (Olivier 657 fer 18) at center of both covers, spine in six compartments with five raised bands, a large flower tool in each compartment, edges gilt. Provenance : Madame du Barry (1743-1793, binding); E. Daguin (note pasted on front pastedown; his sale, part 4, Paris, 10-12 April 1905, lot 1139, illustrated in the Album de reliures , pl. 38); acquired from Marlborough Rare Books, 1984. The most elaborately decorated issue of Senault's prayer book, and one of the most celebrated calligraphic books of the period, deriving in style from the manuscripts executed by Nicolas Jarry This is the earlier issue, with the vignette on p. 210 uncovered. This copy was presumably presented to Madame du Barry, most of whose books were bound by Louis Redon between 1769 and 1774. See 2,000 Years of Calligraphy (Baltimore, 1965), no. 101.
